Eliza turns FOUR

November 16, 2012

Oh Eliza Joy,

Mommy will probably start every birthday post with this question, but it’s okay because it will be a genuine inquiry every single time: how in the world can you be four years old? Mommy just can’t believe it. Everyone always told daddy and mommy that we would blink and you would grow up, and they could not have been more right. It’s is so crazy that four years have gone by since you joined our family. Four seconds, four days, four weeks, sure, four months, maybe. But four years? No. Stinkin. Way.

We love you so much, precious girl. You have always been our teacher, our pioneer, our guinea pig, helping us to figure this parenting thing out. I will admit, sometimes I feel guilty that you always seem to take the “fall” for our lack of parenting skills. And then I (with the help of the Spirit) remember that “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,” and that “[Jesus’] grace is sufficient for you, for [God’s] power is made perfect in weakness.” When it comes to you, baby girl, Daddy and Mommy are so weak. We have no idea what we are doing most of the time. We love you so much, and we want to parent you so well, but we fail every day, multiple times a day. But we keep trying, because we know that we serve and love a God who is good and faithful and powerful enough to use even our poor, inexperienced, weak attempts at parenting for our good and His glory.

One of the reasons that we have no idea what we are doing is because you just don’t fit into any mode or model we try to put you in. You are your own person, you march to the beat of your own drummer, and you will not be shaken from that beat. You have tested our own (meager) wisdom and insight, and God has used you to reveal that we cannot do this parenting thing without Him, every second of every day. And so we continue to set aside our formulas and agendas for parenting and instead ask Him for wisdom and strength and insight and perseverance for parenting such a precious and unique gift as you.

And a gift you are indeed, in every sense of the word. You are so silly and funny. You delight us with your smiles and laughter. Your imagination has taken off this past year, and it has been a joy to go on your adventures with you and dream your dreams. You are such a good big sister, and you love to play with and sing to your siblings. When we were waiting to adopt Naomi and Nate from Uganda, you were just as anxious as daddy and mommy were to go get them, even more so than us it seemed some days. It warms daddy and mommy’s heart every time we hear you singing “Come Thou Fount” or “In Christ Alone” to a crying sister or brother. You are so precious.

We see so many things in you, sweet girl, things that make us praise the Lord and stand in awe of His work in your life. You love to play, with adults and kids alike, and you make friends so easily. This is truly a gifting and blessing from the Lord, and we hope and pray that God will continue to grow you in this way so that you can be a blessing to others by making them feel welcome, loved and included. We can see a heart emerging in you that cares about the people God cares about: the orphan and the sick. We hope and pray that God continues to place these people on your heart and that as you grow you will find ways to tangibly love and serve them. As always, our greatest prayer for you is that you will understand your need for a Savior and come to know that Jesus is your only hope for salvation, that you will find satisfaction and wholeness in loving Jesus and living for Him.

Four years, baby girl. FOUR. You have filled the last four years with so much joy and laughter and fun. We hope and pray God continues to bless us with many more days and years of the same with our sweet Eliza Joy. You are more loved and treasured than we can possibly put into words. Happy Birthday, sweet girl!

Love, Daddy and Mommy
